Creating Exceptional Learning Environments
Week 1 – What Makes an Outstanding EYFS Environment?
An exceptional early years environment is more than an attractive space—it is carefully designed to support how young children learn, explore and develop. In this session, we’ll explore the key features of effective EYFS environments and consider how thoughtful organisation, purposeful provision and accessible resources can promote curiosity, independence and meaningful learning.
Week 2 – Enabling Environments Indoors
A well-designed indoor environment encourages children to explore, make choices and take increasing ownership of their learning. In this session, we’ll explore how thoughtful organisation, accessible resources and purposeful areas of provision can promote independence, curiosity and sustained engagement, creating an environment that responds to the needs of every child.
Week 3 – Outdoor Learning with Purpose
Outdoor learning offers unique opportunities for children to explore, investigate, take appropriate risks and engage with the world around them. In this session, we’ll explore how purposeful outdoor provision can extend learning beyond the classroom, promoting physical development, curiosity, problem-solving and independence through meaningful experiences.
Week 4 – Using Resources to Promote Independence
The way resources are organised and presented can have a powerful impact on children’s independence and engagement. In this session, we’ll explore how accessible, purposeful and carefully chosen resources can encourage children to make choices, solve problems and take greater ownership of their learning, while reducing unnecessary reliance on adults.
Week 5 – Supporting Self-Regulation Through the Environment
The environment can play a powerful role in helping young children understand and manage their emotions, behaviour and attention. In this session, we’ll explore how thoughtful spaces, predictable routines and carefully chosen resources can support children to feel secure, develop self-regulation and become increasingly independent in managing their needs.
Week 6 – Continuous Improvement Through Environment Audits
Effective early years environments continually evolve alongside the children who use them. In this final session, we’ll explore how simple, purposeful environment audits can help practitioners identify what is working well, recognise barriers to learning and make small, meaningful improvements that strengthen provision, independence and engagement.
