Understanding the Role of an Effective Teaching Assistant
Week 1 – What the Research Says: How TAs Make the Biggest Difference
Teaching assistants can make a powerful contribution to pupils’ learning, but research shows that impact depends on how their support is used. The most effective TAs complement high-quality teaching, promote independence and help pupils remain actively engaged in their learning. In this session, we’ll explore what the evidence tells us about effective TA practice and the small changes that can make the biggest difference to pupils.
Week 2 – Access to High Quality Teaching
Every pupil deserves access to high-quality teaching, including those who need additional support. This series explores how teaching assistants can complement teacher-led instruction, remove barriers to learning and provide purposeful support while maintaining high expectations and developing pupils’ confidence and independence.
Week 3 – Avoiding Over-Support and Learned Dependency
Well-intentioned support can sometimes result in pupils becoming reliant on an adult to start, continue or complete their learning. Effective TAs know when to step in and, importantly, when to step back. In this session, we’ll explore practical ways to avoid over-support, encourage productive struggle and gradually reduce adult input so pupils develop greater confidence, resilience and independence.
Week 4 – Understanding Pupil Premium, SEND and Vulnerability
Pupils may experience barriers to learning for many different reasons, and understanding the individual child is essential to providing effective support. In this session, we’ll explore Pupil Premium, SEND and wider vulnerability, considering how these factors may influence pupils’ experiences in school and how TAs can respond sensitively while maintaining high expectations, promoting inclusion and focusing on individual strengths and needs.
Week 5 – Working Ethically and Professionally with Pupils
Teaching assistants hold a trusted position in pupils’ lives, making professional boundaries, confidentiality and respectful relationships essential. In this session, we’ll explore what ethical and professional practice looks like day to day, including maintaining appropriate boundaries, safeguarding information and ensuring interactions consistently protect pupils’ dignity, wellbeing and best interests.
Week 6 – Reflecting on Impact: What Does Effective TA Support Look Like?
Effective TA support is not measured by how much help is given, but by the difference that support makes to pupils’ learning, confidence and independence. In this final session, we’ll reflect on the key principles explored throughout the series and consider how TAs can evaluate their own practice, recognise what is working well and identify small, purposeful changes that can strengthen their impact on pupils.
