Week 1 – Communication and Interaction

Communication and interaction underpin pupils’ ability to understand, express themselves, build relationships and participate in learning. Some pupils may experience barriers in understanding language, communicating their needs or navigating social interaction. In this session, we’ll explore what communication and interaction needs can look like in the classroom and consider practical, inclusive strategies that help pupils engage, communicate and learn with greater confidence.

Week 2 – Cognition and Learning

Cognition and learning needs can affect how pupils understand, process, remember and apply new information. The barriers experienced will vary from pupil to pupil, making it important to look beyond labels and understand the individual learner. In this session, we’ll explore what cognition and learning needs can look like in the classroom and consider practical strategies that support access, build confidence and maintain high expectations.

Week 3 – Social, Emotional and Mental Health

Social, emotional and mental health needs can influence how pupils regulate emotions, build relationships, engage with learning and respond to the demands of school. Behaviour may sometimes be the visible sign of an underlying need or barrier. In this session, we’ll explore what SEMH needs can look like in the classroom and consider supportive, inclusive approaches that promote connection, participation and high expectations for every pupil.

Week 4 – Sensory and Physical Needs

Sensory and physical needs can affect how pupils access the environment, communicate, participate and engage with learning. The barriers experienced will be different for every pupil and may not always be immediately visible. In this session, we’ll explore what sensory and physical needs can look like in practice and consider thoughtful adaptations that improve access, promote independence and enable pupils to participate fully alongside their peers.

Week 5 – When Pupils Have Multiple Needs

Pupils’ needs do not always fit neatly within a single category, and different areas of need can interact in complex ways. Understanding the whole child helps staff move beyond labels and recognise the specific barriers affecting learning, participation and wellbeing. In this session, we’ll explore how teachers and TAs can respond flexibly to multiple needs, prioritise what matters most and provide joined-up support that maintains high expectations.

Week 6 – Looking Beyond Diagnosis

A diagnosis can provide valuable information, but it does not tell us everything about an individual pupil. Effective inclusive practice begins with understanding the child—their strengths, barriers, experiences and what helps them to succeed. In this final session, we’ll explore how teachers and TAs can look beyond labels, remain curious about individual needs and use their knowledge of each pupil to provide responsive, personalised support while maintaining high expectations.
